Frequently asked questions.

What is Botox®?

Botox® is the brand name for a cosmetic neuromodulator known as “botulinum toxin Type A”. Botox® is an FDA approved (1989) injectable used by licensed medical providers to soften unwanted facial lines and wrinkles. Botox often refers to the cosmetic treatment and use of botulinum toxin Type A to reduce dynamic wrinkles and deep set lines.

Why Xeomin?

While similar to Botox®, Xeomin (FDA approved in 2010) is considered the naked injectable. Xeomin is the most pure form of botulinum toxin Type A as it excludes unnecessary additive proteins.

What areas of the face are most commonly treated?

  • Glabellar Region aka “elevens”, “t-zone”, “wrinkles between the eyebrows”

  • Frontalis Muscle aka “forehead wrinkles”

  • Orbicularis Oculi aka “Crows Feet”

What should I know prior to my appointment?

It is important that you have no active skin infections in the areas to be treated! If something comes up, no problem! We can reschedule when you are feeling your best!

  • Avoid alcoholic beverages at least 24 hours prior to treatment. This is important because alcohol may thin your blood, which will increases the risk of bruising after treatment.

  • Avoid anti-inflammatory /blood thinning medications ideally, for a period of two (2) weeks before treatment. Medications and supplements such as Aspirin, Vitamin E, Gingo Biloba, St. John’s Wort, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Aleve and other NSAIDS are all blood thinning and can increase the risk of bruising/swelling after injections. For other blood thinners, inquire with your primary doctor if Botox is right for you!

  • Bruising can be unpredictable! Be sure to schedule your injectable appointment at least 2 weeks prior to a special event which may be occurring, i.e., wedding, vacation, etc!

Do injectables hurt?

Everyone’s pain tolerance is different! The botulinum toxin is administered with a very small needle which greatly reduces the pain, in most cases! Most patients report feeling surprised in the lack of pain associated with injections! It is over before you know it!

How long do injectables last?

Typically, injectables last between 3 and 4 months. Overtime, the facial muscles begin to respond to movement again and wrinkles, though less, will reappear. This is your sign that it is time for another treatment!

SkinPen: What is it and how does it work?

SkinPen is an FDA approved microneedling device that employs fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. These micro-injuries stimulate the body's natural healing processes, triggering collagen and elastin production. The result is improved skin texture, reduced fine lines, and an overall rejuvenated complexion.

SkinPen: Is microneedling suitable for all skin types?

Yes, SkinPen is suitable for a variety of skin types and tones. Its adjustable needle depth allows for customization, making it versatile and adaptable to individual skincare needs. However, it's essential to consult with a skincare professional to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for your specific skin concerns.

SkinPen: What can I expect during and after a treatment?

During the procedure, you may experience a mild sensation as the device glides over the skin. Following the treatment, some redness and minor swelling are common, but these effects typically subside within a day or two. Results become noticeable over time as the skin undergoes the natural rejuvenation process, and optimal outcomes are often achieved with a series of sessions.

SkinPen: How long does a session take, and is there downtime?

A SkinPen session typically lasts around 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the areas being treated. While there is minimal downtime, you may experience some redness and mild swelling immediately after the procedure. It's recommended to avoid sun exposure and use gentle skincare products in the days following treatment to support the healing process.

SkinPen: How soon will I see results, and how long do they last?

Results vary from person to person, but many individuals notice improvements in skin texture and tone within a few weeks after the initial session. Optimal results are often achieved with a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart. The longevity of results can also be influenced by individual factors, skincare maintenance, and lifestyle choices. Regular follow-up sessions may be recommended to maintain and enhance the benefits of SkinPen treatments.
